GDDR was the first version of Graphics Double Data Rate memory that was introduced in 1999s for graphics cards. This version had a 16 Mb data transfer speed and was made by Samsung Electronics. This first-generation memory was developed in the form of a chip on video cards to fasten their speed.

With the introduction of this memory chip in graphics cards, the speed of devices was enhanced. 


GDDR2 is the second version of GDDR memory that came with better features and memory on electronic devices. This second generation was also introduced by Samsung in 2002. Later on, Nvidia developed the first commercial GDDR chip for its graphics card to enhance its speed and performance.

The clock speed of this version was 500 MHz and the data transfer rate was also enhanced.


In GDDR3, the version improved the module of the chip to provide lower power consumption and a high output rate. This third version of GDDR memory has better features than the previous one. The clock rate was enhanced up to 625MHz and the speed of data transfer was 2.5 GPs. All these improvements were made to meet the user’s need for a graphics screen.


In the next version of GDDR memory which is known as GDDR4, the data transmission rate was enhanced more. The manufacturers introduced data buses to decrease the data transfer rate. The clock speed of this version decreased to 275 MHz and the data transfer rate was 2.2 Gbps.


GDDR5 came on the market with 625-1000 MHz clock speed and the data transfer rate was 5-8 Gbps. This speed was perfect for gamers to enjoy faster and smoother gaming screens. They can use this type of memory on graphics cards to make the CPU faster and more efficient while video gaming.


GDDR5X was the pro version of GDDR5 that came with enhanced performance and features for PC users. This version had a 624-875 MHz clock speed and a 10-12 Gbps data transfer rate. Bandwidth and the actual data transfer rate were improved in this version of RAM for gamers.


After the fifth generation of GDDR memory, an enhanced version with many new features was developed. This is known as GDDR6 and comes with pro features on graphics cards. The version has high bandwidth and uses lower voltage power to increase CPU performance.

This generation has an 875-1000 Megas hertz clock speed and offers a 14-16 gigabytes per second data transfer rate to the gamers. It can work on even lower voltage to provide a high-end screen while doing graphics-related tasks.


GDDR 6X is considered the latest version of GDDR memory on the market for graphics cards. Gamers who want to enjoy high-resolution games must prefer this video graphics memory on their PC. It offers 1000+ megahertz clock speed and a 19-21 megabyte data transfer rate per second.
